The Department of Anatomy and Cellular Biology's Electron Microscopy Laboratory has been expanded and renovated, providing the Tufts university Community with access to state of the art facilities for a variety of morphological approaches. The laboratory (M&V 142) is composed of a general lab area, a microtomy suite, darkrooms and copy area, as well as separate microscopy suites. In addition, ample general work space is available.

The microscopy suite (M&V 504) houses:

Transmission and scanning electron microscopy

A complete darkroom for the processing of photographic plates

A Phillips CM10 transmission electron microscope with goniometer, single tilt and rotating/tilt specimen holders

ISI DS130 scanning electron microscope

Equipment available for sample preparation includes:

3 Reichert Ultracut E Ultramicrotomes

Reichert FC4D Ultracryo Unit

Edwards Auto 306 Vacuum Evaporator equipped for general coating

rotary shadowing techniques and conventional shadowing

IEC Minitome Cryostat

Complete Photographic facilities also supported within the facility. Both darkrooms have:

Durst L 1200 EM Enlargers

Agfa DD3700 print processors

Arkay 2600 Print Dryer

Polaroid MP4 Copy Stand for 35 mm & 4x5 format work

The facility provides access to the equipment for trained users as well as providing instruction in sample preparation and equipment usage. In addition, a variety of services are available including:

routine transmission and scanning electron microscopy

rotary shadowing of isolated macromolecules, and immunocytochemistry
